Let’s learn to play a few chord patterns below which are helpful when improvising music. In each of these lessons, you will learn a technique to make the left hand parts more interesting when playing songs.

Lesson 18 – Double Chord Pattern
| Part 1 – You will notice that only one chord is played in each measure in the original song, “Brother John”. |
| Part 2 – In this part, a pattern of two chords (doubled chords) are played in each measure. |
Lesson 19 – Broken Chord Pattern
| Part 1: You will notice that the left hand plays all of the notes of a chord together in “London Bridge is Falling Down” |
| Part 2: In this part: each of the chords is broken down into two (2) parts: i.e. play the first note of the chord by itself, and then followed by playing the second and third notes of the chord together. |
| For example: instead of playing all the notes of C Major chord (C-E-G) together, you will be playing note C, followed by playing notes E and G together; same is true for G Major chord: play G, then B and D together |
Lesson 20 – Arpeggio Chord Pattern
| Part 1: You will notice that the left hand plays all of the notes of the chord at the same time in “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. |
| Part 2: The left hand plays notes of the chord separately. This is called playing using an arpeggio pattern. |
