In any given Major Scale, there are three major chords (I, IV, and V), three minor chords (ii, iii, and vi), and one diminished chord (vii or o).
 
While the primary chords are built on major chord, the Secondary Chords (ii, iii, vi) are built on a Minor Chords]. Below are the three secondary chords in the Key of C:



 

      D Chord (ii ) – notes are D – F – A
      E Chord (iii) – notes are E – G – B
      A Chord (vi) – notes are A – C – E

Secondary chords are built on the 2nd (ii) note, 3rd (iii), and 6th (vi) of any given major scale, and since they are all minor chords, so they sound sad.
