Dominant Seventh Chord

The symbol of dominant 7th is –
the number “7” is written as a superscript after the chord root.
For example C Dominant 7th chord will be written as C7


Root + 4HS + 3HS + 3HS
Root + Major third + Perfect fifths + minor seventh
In the key of C, the notes of C7 are:
C + E + G + Bb

Major Seventh Chord

The symbol of Major 7th is –
written as maj7 or M7 after the chord root.
For example C Major 7th chord will be written as Cmaj7, or CM7



Root + 4HS + 3HS + 4HS, or
Root + Major third + Perfect fifths + Major seventh
In the key of C, the notes for Cmaj7, or CM7 are:
C + E + G + B

Minor Seventh Chord

The symbol of Minor 7th is –
written as m7 or -7 after the chord root.
For example C Minor 7th chord will be written as Cm7, or C-7

Root + 3HS + 4HS + 3HS
Root + minor third + Perfect fifths + minor seventh
In the key of C, the notes for Cm7, or C-7 are:
C + Eb + G + Bb
